IN THE NEWS:
All School Musical STARS 2nd Largest Fundraiser of 2009 - 2010

Besides being a great success as a performance and a great learning
opportunity for our students, our All School Musical also has turned out
to be a great fundraiser for the STARS Foundation. The STARS Foundation
granted the All School Musical a grant of $7,000.00 to put on our very
popular Willy Wonka Musical Performance. This year’s expenses for the
musical totaled $6,833.98 and the total revenue brought back to the
STARS Foundation from ticket sales and business sponsors, etc. was
$5,485.00 leaving a total cost of only $1,348.98. Thanks again to all
of our talented students and generous volunteers for putting on an all
around great show!

What is STARS?
The STARS Foundation (consisting of
parents, teachers, & community members) is a unique non-profit
organization created to enrich the lives of our students. Funded through
an annual auction, STARS programs create/support enrichment and learning
opportunities at Edmonds Elementary.
The STARS Foundation is a
valuable resource for teachers; providing key financial resources for
programs which allow teachers to use their creativity to educate/enrich
their students.
In past programs supported by the STARS
Foundation, students have written, illustrated and created beautifully
bound books, designed quilts based on their study of
geometry/tessellating patterns, developed portfolios of photographs
presented with reflective essays and have studied the art of
illumination. In addition, grants for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th grades provided
hundreds of books for take home and in school reading. The Artist in
Residency programs have beautified our courtyard and resulted in clay
tile murals, which adorn the breezeways. Other STARS classroom fine art
projects (arts, drama, writing) have engaged students in learning and
problem solving.
The work of the STARS Foundation is not limited
to the arts, it touches every academic subject. In addition, the STARS
Foundation has supported programs for families and the community such as
our annual ORCAStrated Art Show and our All-School Musical..
A Brief History…
In 1998 the
“Orca”Strated Art Show was established to encourage art enrichment in
our school. At the same time another group of parents began working to
enhance the science program. They combined their efforts to provide
enrichment programs and the non-profit STARS foundation was formed in
June 1998. A dinner auction was chosen as the means to raise funds. The
first auction took place June 11, 1999.
How does STARS distribute funds…
Any teacher, parent, staff member, or
community member is eligible to make requests for enrichment activities
and projects through a grant writing process.
The STARS
Foundation Board, a group of parents and teachers, meet twice a year to
approve grants and oversee the distribution of funds according to
specific STARS guidelines.
